Holiday-ready? What 1,077 US gift brands' own pages tell shoppers

Shoppers, and the AI assistants they now ask for gift ideas, can only use what a brand's pages say. In mid-October we checked ten gift-shopping facts on the public storefronts of 1,077 US Shopify gift brands: candle makers, jewelers, food and drink makers, bath and body brands, kids' and pet brands and more.

3%

of the brands state a holiday order-by date or shipping cutoff anywhere we checked: 36 of 1,077.

What we found

  1. Holiday cutoffs are almost absent. 36 of 1,077 brands (3%) state a holiday order-by date or cutoff on any page we checked; 1,041 (96%) don't. Ten of those 36 still show a past season's dates. In food and drink it was 3 of 176.
  2. A quarter have no usable shipping policy. 274 brands (25%) have no usable shipping policy or general shipping page, and 250 (23%) give no time frame anywhere in their shipping policy, shipping pages or FAQ.
  3. Gift help is rarely spelled out. 72 brands (6%) mention gift wrap, a gift note or a gift receipt on the pages we checked. Of 1,010 returns policies, 147 (14%) mention gifts or gift recipients.
  4. Best sellers describe the item, not its care or origin. Most give a size or count (86%) and materials (93%). Only 25% include care or use instructions, and 38% say where the product is made or sourced, even though most of these brands were found through made-in-USA guides.
  5. More than a quarter of best sellers have no product category. 302 of 1,073 (28%) have no Shopify product category set.

What this means before the holidays

A gift shopper's first questions are practical: will it arrive in time, what size is it, can the recipient return it. When a brand's own pages don't answer them, neither can the shopper, or the assistant they asked. The fixes are mostly a few sentences: an order-by line in the shipping policy, a delivery time, care steps and where the product is made.

Method

The brands come from Pickworthy's verified list of US Shopify gift brands: US shops with 8 to 2,500 products, mostly selling their own brand, found through gift guides and maker directories. For each brand we read its public Shopify storefront data: shipping and refund policies, up to 250 store pages, and its best seller (the top item in Shopify's best-selling order, skipping gift cards, add-ons and similar items). Automated text matching marked each brand yes, no or couldn't tell on each measure. We read every holiday-cutoff match by hand and spot-checked the other rules.
